Although he was born and spent his early years on the east coast, Michael Doman found his voice as a songwriter and rebel poet in the bone-dry streets and dusty hills of Los Angeles. From his debut as front man for the L.A.-based cult band Broken Homes to his solo performances at prestigious Hollywood singer-songwriter haunts The Hotel Café and Room Five, he brought audiences into his world of darkness and light. He wrote about the dreams that drive ambitious young artists west to the endless flats of the Valley (“Shine”). He cursed the record companies and shysters who preyed on those dreams (“What Comes Around…Goes Around”). He chronicled the characters he met (“My Street” “U R What U R”) and the romances of long, sun-soaked summers (“Echo Park,” “One Karat Girl”).

A history of childhood abuse casts a shadow over many of Michael’s songs (“Beautiful,” “Damaged”) In spite of that, or perhaps because of it, through all his lyrics runs the powerful voice of a man striving for self-awareness, honesty, and a plea for kindness and understanding.

Whether he was opening for The Doors “Rock and Roll Hall of Fame” tour or performing an intimate set in a small coffee house, Michael set a standard for emotion, sensuality, and self-revelation that few have matched. Sadly, a years-long illness and his death in December 2020 silenced his voice before a broader audience could discover him. Bird & Apple Records is currently releasing a trove of Michael’s solo recordings that have not previously been heard. For more information, visit our contact page.
